The Department of Civil Engineering, C. Abdul Hakeem College of Engineering and Technology, organized a Guest Lecture Programme on the topic “Exploring Sustainable Concrete” on 10.08.2026 at the college premises. The programme was organized to provide students with an understanding of sustainable practices in concrete technology and the need for environmentally responsible construction.
The programme was graced by Dr. T. Shanmuga Priya, Professor, VIT, Vellore, as the Chief Guest and Resource Person. With her academic expertise and professional experience, she provided valuable insights into the recent developments and applications of sustainable concrete.
Technical Session
During the guest lecture, Dr. T. Shanmuga Priya explained the concept and significance of sustainable concrete in modern construction. She highlighted the environmental impact associated with conventional concrete production and emphasized the importance of developing construction materials that reduce the consumption of natural resources and minimize environmental pollution.
The resource person discussed various approaches to producing sustainable concrete, including the use of industrial by-products, supplementary cementitious materials, recycled aggregates and alternative materials. The students were introduced to the importance of reducing cement consumption, utilizing waste materials effectively and improving the durability and service life of concrete structures.
The lecture also focused on the role of sustainable concrete in reducing the carbon footprint of the construction industry. The resource person explained how appropriate material selection, efficient mix design, recycling and resource conservation can contribute to environmentally friendly construction practices.
